A family farmstead in Machiasport, where spruce woods meet pasture and the pond turns pink at dusk.
Machias River Farms is a working family farmstead on Machias River Farm Road in Machiasport, Maine. We live here year-round with our animals, through kidding seasons and blizzards, market mornings and midnight barn checks, and now with the littlest farmer riding along in a stroller.
Everything that carries our wreath starts here: milk from goats we milk ourselves, pork from pigs we raise on our own pasture, and recipes we make in small batches so nothing needs an artificial shortcut.
Tradition is the husbandry: registered breeds, pasture time, patience, and respect for the animal. Innovation is the craft: a modern farmstead creamery, careful cultures like BB-12® and LGG®, and dry-curing methods that turn heritage pork into rustic classics.
Every product we make traces back to animals we raise ourselves, with no antibiotics and no added hormones.
The dairy herd
Our ADGA-registered Alpines are curious, hardy, and built for Maine winters. Their milk is naturally rich in A2 beta casein protein, and it becomes our kefir and thick Greek-style yogurt within steps of the barn.
The pigs
Registered heritage breeds prized for marbling and depth of flavor, with access to pasture year-round. They become our slow dry-cured pepperoni.
The flock
Our birds provide fresh farm eggs and patrol the yard for bugs through the season. They round out the farm, and they’re a favorite stop for visitors.
Our dairy is farmstead in the true sense: made only from our own herd’s milk, gently heat-treated and cultured in small batches with live probiotics. Our pork takes even longer. Pepperoni is seasoned, cased, and dry-cured slowly until it earns its place on the board.
Washington County is blueberry barrens, tidal rivers, and long winters. Farming here takes stubbornness and neighbors. You’ll find us at Downeast farmers markets through the season, and at the farm the rest of the year.
